109.A.1
Location:
Private collection.
Unsigned autograph draft consisting of 16 leaves (32 of a probable total of 36 pages), with 4 hand-drawn staves per page, corresponding to two systems.
On the first page (see 109.D.1), at the top center, appears the title “Entrata”, probably in Puccini’s hand; to the right, in slightly lighter ink, the annotation: “Bozza del / mio Valzer / fatta dal maestro / Petri. Febbraio 86”. The first line of the annotation (“Bozza del”) includes the abbreviation “G P” (Giacomo Puccini) and the page number “1”, written in the same ink as “Entrata”. Given the difference in ink intensity, it is likely that the annotation was added at a later time.
The pages are numbered from 1 to 33, though with inconsistencies in sequence and numbering: 1-11, 10-11, 12-14, 17, followed by 2 unnumbered pages, 20, 25-33, and then 3 further unnumbered pages. Pages 21-24 are missing.
The music is written mainly in black ink, partially in blue ink, and features frequent use of abbreviations and internal cross-references. Corrections are made primarily in black ink, occasionally in blue ink or white pencil; strike-through lines are drawn in black ink or red pencil. Entire sections are rewritten consecutively, at times without the earlier drafts being erased.
