Portions of drafts for 54.B.1 (some sketched several times), consisting of 120 bars in all on 4 pages.
On p. 1 is the autograph heading: “I° esame (Ideale) ore 6 pomeridiane / domenica 10 giugno 1883 / Parole di Felice Romani” and, in a different handwriting, “II (pg. 1-5)”. At the end of the music, on p. 5, Puccini wrote: “pieta un dolor di denti noioso che mi ha tormentato dalle 7 alle 2 [have mercy! a wearisome toothache tormented me from 7:00 to 2:00]”, as well as some further text crossed out and made illegible by deletion.

The leaf, erroneously sorted by I-Mc  as part of 53 (Manoscritti 30/8, the leaf numbered “1” [see NOTES for 53]), originally belonged to this manuscript as the title page, the recto of which bears Puccini’s signature “Giacomo Puccini”, and below (in a different handwriting) the inscription “Elaborato / dell’ Alunno Sig. Puccini” (v. blank) See also Kaye 1987, p. 33, who correctly describes the erroneous numbering.
The voice part is written in the tenor clef and the manuscript contains a few corrections in a different hand.
On p. 1, probably written by an official of the Milan Conservatory, is the indication: “Ricevuto alle ore 6 1/2 pom [received at 6:30 p.m.]”. At the end of the music, Puccini wrote “G Puccini”. The signatures of his professors and examiners, Bazzini, Ponchielli, Panzini, Saladino, and Dominiceti, appear at the end.
