71. E l'uccellino. Ninna-nanna
Not Known
71.B.1
Location:Private property of the Lippi Francesconi family, Lucca
Score of the complete composition, 2 pages, 2° with 12 staves (1 page of text, 1 page of music); a photograph of the manuscript is preserved in I-Mr (N.II.4).
On the text page, Puccini wrote: “Ninna-Nanna / versi di R. Fucini / musica di GPuccini”, followed by the lyrics of the song. At the top of the page bearing the music he wrote: “Ninna-Nanna Parole di R. Fucini / Musica di G. Puccini”, at the bottom: “Per il bimbino Lippi / Giacomo Puccini / Torre del Lago / 25.2.99.”
This is a very neat fair copy. Puccini may have had the photograph of the manuscript now in I-Mr made himself from the original he presented to the Lippi family. In any event, it is not a modern photocopy. According to a notice inserted with the photograph, it existed in I-Mr in October 1970, but had probably been there for decades.
71.B.2
Location:Last at the Drouot auction of 20 June 2018, No. 1208 (already offered at the Stargardt auction of 25/26 November 1997, No. 905, and at the Stargardt auction of 16/17 February 1971, No. 669)
1 double leaf (2 pages of which contain music) comprising the entire composition.
Autograph title: “E l’uccellino ..... / Ninna-Nanna / al bimbino Memmo Lippi / Parole di R. Fucini / Musica di G. Puccini”. On p. 4, Puccini wrote: “Ninna Nanna / Torre del Lago / GPuccini / 25 febbr[aio] 99.”
This is another very neat copy with some extra detailed marks of expression when compared to 71.B.1. It agrees with 71.E.1, so 71.B.2 may have served as the model for that first published edition. It is also possible that 71.B.2 was written only a few months after 71.B.1 was finished.

E l’uccellino. Ninna-Nanna. Parole di R. Fucini.
The first page of music bears the dedication “Al bimbino Memmo Lippi”.

According to MRL, production of this edition began on 5 June 1899; it was mentioned for the first time in the supplement to Ricordi’s Catalogo generale, included in the Gazetta musicale of 19 October 1899 and publicly announced in the Gazzetta musicale of 8 February 1900 (advertisements p. 7).
Registered at the Prefettura di Milano on 20 October 1899 (I-Rsc B.924.7).
Apart from details in the expression marks, the printed edition differs from 71.B.1 (and probably also from 71.B.2) in that the fourth and third bar before the end are not repeated. Puccini probably made those corrections before the song was printed.

According to MRL, production of this edition began on 17 June 1920; this, however, is unlikely in view of the registration dates at GB-Lbl and US-Wc. Strangely enough, MRK records the only printing date as 31 March 1930.
